How to choose a destination as a group: 5 methods compared

Every group has its own way of choosing where to go, and the discussion almost always starts in the chat. Here are the five most common methods, with the pros and cons of each, to see which suits you.

  1. A poll in the WhatsApp or Telegram chat

It's the fastest: it's already there, no app needed. It works well when there are two or three clear options. The limits: everyone gets one vote, so you can't tell how much they care; proposals and reasons get lost in the messages; and whoever doesn't answer holds everyone up.

  2. A shared doc or spreadsheet

Google Docs, a spreadsheet or Notion keep everything in one place: destinations, prices, links. Good for organised groups. But someone has to look after it, it's awkward on a phone, and a document collects ideas without helping you choose.

  3. An itinerary app

Apps like Wanderlog are great for organising a trip that is already decided: days, maps, bookings, expenses. They are built mostly for afterwards, once the destination is set. If the group still has to choose where to go, decide first and use them next.

  4. One person decides

The fastest method of all: one person chooses, the others trust them. It works in small groups and when someone knows everyone's tastes. The risk is that whoever wasn't heard comes along reluctantly, or doesn't come.

  5. Proposals, points voting and a wheel

It's Roamie's method: everyone proposes their destinations with a photo and reasons, then has 10 points to spread (secretly too), and a wheel with slices as big as the points settles the indecision. It weighs how much each person cares, not just what they pick. The limit: everyone has to open the link, though a name is enough to vote.

  6. Which one to use

Two or three clear options: the poll in the chat is enough. Lots of different ideas and tastes: points voting. Destination already decided: an itinerary app or a doc to organise. Often the best route is to mix them: choose with points, organise afterwards.

General, indicative information: seasons, prices and conditions change, so always check before you go.
